Field Notes - The Rest is Science - Earth’s Tilt Makes Time Slippery
Earth’s Tilt Makes Time Slippery
3:45 Whose day? Quite a few species are nocturnal, some twilight dwellers, so we asserted day and night on what is useful to us
10:14 For reasons of Newtonian physics alone difficult to put a universal time, yet in most cases, it just doesn't matter if the sun is a few fractions of a degree further along or not, as long as everyone is synchronising to the same reference...but when you take relativity into account, where you just have to say goodbye to simultaneity, it gets really hard to accurately represent the rotational status of the earth, relative to the sun within 4 digits for the whole of earth 😅
11:37 😅🥹🥹🥹🫠🫶
21:17 ...and then the whole solar system is traveling in orthogonal direction of the planetary rotational disc and there is all kinds of wobbeling in earths rotation, due to the constantly changing constellations of the planets..so it really just hasn't been a very accurate science there...despite scientists selling it as such...for reasons 😅
24:00 Indeed...it's a pretty messy thing...not as smooth as our maths suggest...Benoit Mandelbrot spoke about this in terms of roughness and smoothness and that in the past, nothing in our environment was smooth except for 2-3 things, but now we got used to all these right angles and plain surfaces and round objects and such, which might actually be another feature of self defeating notions...that we fancy smoothness over roughness, because we find our own odd shape repulsing and try to get away from it by fancying geometry, smoothness over roughness...
Benoit B. Mandelbrot, MIT 2001 - Fractals in Science, Engineering and Finance (Roughness and Beauty)
So...linear things became "good", while non-linear stuff became "Chaotic"...we didn't like it anymore, because it was too much like us and we need to be smooth and predictable and fit smoothly through the jig hole and such, otherwise, you're no good and nothing will become of you...while anything that we look at now, isn't smooth at all...and that's where our maths fail us...just like with the inaccurate time zones, it "didn't matter"(didn't kill us entirely or became a show stopper for what we were aiming at doing) at these scales so far, as long as everyone agreed to the same thing, true or not.
But now we advance into areas, where averaging is not good enough anymore, to be able to overlook these complex, dynamic systems...huge or small...
Pipedreams...fortunately we realised early enough how little we actually know

...the rest I stretch for tomorrow^^ <3
26:03 How overengineered it looks, just to tackle a problem that isn't really one anymore and pursue an interest to explore a principle...you just gotta love people for that^^ I mean...sun dials are so attractive because of their low tec requirements, right? But it does indeed look absolutely delicious^^ 😅
27:50 You could add a micro Arduino computer, a small servo, some small photovoltaic and battery and a simple diode and some programming to make it auto adjust its orientation towards the angle of the sunlight...there is nothing over-engineered that you couldn't overengineer a little bit further even 😁
30:10 😌🌞🕶️🫶
31:22 ...oh that must feel satisfactory, chapeau!
36:00 Oh you gotta be kidding me xD
Well, Paul Coleman, the guy who figured out that matter density distribution in space follows fractal patterns instead of averaging out, was a Hawaiian...singular call he did there, unfortunately widely ignored for...you know...reasons 😅
But maybe it was the sunny-brainy-resty culture that pointed him to becoming a scientist and such a good one especially 😅 ...great titbit of info there, thx! I plan on looking deeper into Hawaiian culture...a nice Return to Monkey Island adventure, I expect ...maybe an Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis one...who knows^^

40:40 Full pokerface in face of apparently cruel moon 😁🪬
But now you know exactly why you're in London or in Britain in general....cause the bitching is just such a sport there like nowhere else and I just love that...hard pass on the constant rain though...how about some Mediterranean island? ...like Corsica, Malta, Sicily or Cyprus(a friend of mine from here lives there for many years already 🤔)...or one of the many Greek ones? 😎☀️⛱️
42:00 ...as in "dual use" 😅
42:42 ...who wouldn't? 🤩🥰😆

44:33 I'd love to get out there and look at Uranus while it's so close...glands and all^^ 🤩😏
45:31 ...somehow I must have had a premonition yesterday or there must have been a synchronicity on the topic of whole digging in our minds, when I posted this yesterday, before I had finished your last episode...entanglement much? 😁

46:30 ...moist sandwiches sound like a great idea to me 😏😆
I'll be eternally in your gratitude for that nice curveball of a pulse, Michael xD
47:00 If they only had had this in Finding Nemo 😅

49:15 Exactly...time zones do indeed make it a bit hard to not sleep like Nicola Tesla and still follow the beat 😅
Really nice episode, thanks as always and much love!...See you around or next week :3 🫶🫶🫶
